Skiing Fun and Pain

Here is your warning: I am a long-winded story teller and here is more proof. So, if I don't see any comments I will know that you ran out of "blog-stalking" time and didn't make it through to the end.

Our friends, the Christensen's, talked us into going skiing this year and bringing our two oldest girls along. It was the first time for Emma, Mady and myself. Drew had gone once or twice in his tween years, but was not recollecting much. It was all excitement leading up to the actual skiing itself, as both girls had seen the episode of Phineas and Ferb where they build a ski slope in the backyard (and if you know what I am talking about you are as cool as I am) . Once Mady realized that skiing wasn't just riding the chair lift as shown on the show, she was done. She mostly rode inbetween Drew's legs, occasionally practicing the pizza wedge on her own.

Lisa and Gary are both really good skiers, so they were teaching both the kids and us. Below is a picture of them with their daughter Karly. Notice how much fun she is having. She and Mady were on the same page.

This is the only picture I have of Kaleb. He has been skiing many more times than I have and he took off on his own. Every once in a while our paths would cross.

Emma was able to pick up the wedge quite quickly, but got tired and started racing straight down the hill the second time down. I was slowly making my way down after her, due to my lack of skill and technique, yelling "wedge, Emma, wedge"! She crashed quite comfortably in some fluff, but I was traumatized. I saw her life flash before MY eyes. She did so good for it being her first time. I know with a little more instruction and practice she will be a pro.

What I learned that day:

Do not take your kids skiing for their first time on your first time

Put your kids in lessons-the instructors are paid to have patience

The pizza wedge hurts=Ashly's Thighs Burn

Sunscreen

You must lift your kids onto the ski lift (Emma almost didn't make it one time)

I wish I had learned all of my lessons that day. But, the story continues......

At the beginning of March Drew's work had a ski day up at the Deer Valley Resort. We invited the Christensen's not only as potential clients, but as our personal ski instructors. They arrived ahead of time to get some quality skiing in before they were saddled with us. So, Drew and I are riding the ski lift up to meet them when, oops, I DROP MY POLE in the middle of some very nice powder. Well, great, this day is starting off quite nicely! We get to the top and Drew being the knight that I married said that he would attempt to retrieve it. I was to ski down the run adjacent to this area and meet him.

He takes off as I try to talk myself into going. It was steep! I attempt to start and just as quickly I fall over on purpose to avoid doing an Emma. I try it again, but I am terrified, and I just sit down. Someone asks if I need help, probably because I look so pathetic. (Drew says, in my defense, this was a blue run, and I had never actually skied, unless you yourself consider the pizza wedge skiing.) I gladly take the help of 2 wonderful angels who literally talk me down the mountain. I can't remember their names, but I wish I could. If it weren't for them I would still be sitting there today. Anyway, Drew waited at the bottom for at least 15 minutes until I slowly arrived.

We finally met up with Lisa and Gary. I was ready to call it a day. But with some assurance that we would go on easier runs I agreed to try it one more time. And to my amazement I really started to enjoy myself. It was fun! I still fell quite a few times.

A couple of hours later the lifts were closing so we headed back. We were getting off the final lift to do our last run down when KERSPLAT! I fall pretty much face first off the lift. Well, I kind of fell on the side of my body with my head making some pretty hard contact. It hurt, but I wasn't going to be a complete wuss after that. I mean, really, who falls off the ski lift? So we finish the run, say our good-byes and head home.

My neck was pretty sore and suddenly I started seeing black spots in my vision. And then I started getting nauseous. And I realized I probably have a concussion.

Needless to say, the ER doctor agreed with me and after some pain meds, a week of rest, and physical therapy I can honestly say that I am feeling better and planning on going skiing again......just not this year. Oh and the irony was that as we sat waiting for the doctor there was this poem on the wall

Learning to Ski

by Roz Rosenbluth

It's a long way down

From the top of this hill,

And I'm terribly frightened

Of taking a spill.

But all of a sudden

I let myself go,

And I find myself flying

Through wind and through snow

The trees all flash by me;

The wind burns my face.

I lose track of time

And I lose track of place.

But I land on my feet

And I'm laughing with glee.

It's a wonderful feeling--

I'm learning to ski!

MORE lessons learned:

Do not attempt a blue run on your first "official" time skiing unless you want to cry like a baby

(I was very close to this)

If you are short, you must scoot yourself forward ahead of time in order to GLIDE OFF the ski lift

( I did not do this, hence the falling off the lift)

Orem Community Hospital is not only a good place to give birth, but they also have a great ER!

Crazy Hair Day

Emma's school had a food drive and any class who hit their collection goal got to have a special "crazy hair" day. Emma came up with this one all on her own. I thought it was very creative.

Emma and Naomi
What is crazier than a bunch of Littlest Pet Shop animals in your hair?

Um, Not so Much, but thanks for the option.

I am not one of those moms that get my kids on solid food early. I figure if they are eating something by the time I am ready to wean them, around a year, than I am doing good. Really I am just too lazy. I usually offer rice cereal to my kids around 6 months. Here was Lillie's reaction.

Yes, she did gag. She didn't actually throw up. But, I have tried giving her broken pieces of Cheerios. The result? Two episodes of upchucking. One time was in the car and the other was at church, all over Drew! I actually kind of saw that last one coming but didn't react soon enough or in the right way......I started laughing! Hey, I have been there myself with this kid. Many, many times.

And for your viewing pleasure, this is one of our favorite Lillie faces!

The Cruise

I had mixed feelings. I know, I know, I should have been jumping for joy at the opportunity to go on a *free* cruise to the Caribbean. Drew's work informed us of this gift about a year ago, after I was already pregnant with our sweet Lillie baby. She would be six months old by that time and we would just take her with us, right? We had taken Cooper with us to Mexico when he was just seven months old and that worked out fine, right? Well, with Drew absolutely against that idea, and rumors that no one else in the firm was taking their babies, and on the advise from many others who have cruised and thought it would be hard with a baby, we left all four kids in very capable hands. And off we went on our first vacation ALONE FOR 7 WHOLE DAYS!!!

It was extremely hard building up to it. Not only having to leave a six month old who refuses to take a bottle, but also the other 3 who are still young and need a lot of attention (you all know this from experience). And then there was the packing for us, and packing for them, and preparing for emergencies and our possible death ( I was a bit teary writing up a Will)and writing out instructions which ended up being 7 pages long and I know I could have gone on and on anyway.... we did leave in the middle of a snowstorm on Valentine's Day. And arrived in Florida to beautiful weather! Ahhhhh, sunshine!!! I didn't miss Utah weather one bit! So here are a few pictures to make you jealous.

We thought these life vests were awesome. Before we could leave port we had to have an emergency lifeboat drill. Drew thought it was real, he, he!

Pulling out of port in Florida.

On the beach in Half Moon Cay.

This is my idea of a vacation! I could have done this every day, all day long....with the exception of a nap thrown in there.

Grand Turk, BWI
Our cruise ship, the Ms Westerdam, oh and Drew.

Grand Turk
Stingray City in Grand Cayman
Drew holding a stingray. They were everywhere and "as friendly as cats and dogs." After some initial hysterics, I did hold one for a few seconds, but there was no love between us (mostly not from me), and soon thereafter I exited the water.

Our excursion, not quite what we expected, um, more of a workout really.

Cozumel, Mexico
Beto, our very kind instructor.

Formal night on the boat.

The weather was perfect, the company was entertaining, and the food was good. I didn't have to cook, clean, do laundry, change diapers, do finances, run interference or get up in the middle of the night. And I only cried, with an ache in my heart for my 4 kids, a few times including 3 on the way home. And now with them crying and fighting in the background I am wondering when my next vacation is!
And the baby takes a bottle now thanks to the combined efforts of my sister Brittani and my mom. They manned all 4 kids for the first 24 hours. My sister Ana took time off of work to be a substitute mom for Lillie for the entire week and due to unforeseen circumstances helped out with the older ones as well. My mom took the 3 oldest back to our house and handed them off to Drew's parents mid-week. They came all the way from California to help out. Thanks to MaryAnn for the dress, and Lisa, Ana and Steph for outfitting me for the cruise. And thanks to Trent and Earl for being our chauffeurs to and from the airport. This wouldn't have been possible without you!

My Children Are Quitters

Is anyone out there in need of a binkie or four? Because in the past week or so Lillie has followed the example set by her 3 older siblings and has decided that she is no longer in need of this "crutch." She would rather be pacified by her own means, which include crying, nuzzling my neck and face somewhat forcefully, and getting the attention of anyone who will look her way, at which time she smiles and smiles!

Emma gave up her binky at 10 months or so. She was getting her first tooth and I guess she blamed all the pain on the darn things and wouldn't touch them again. Mady never took one and if you know her you know that there was no way of forcing it on her. And Cooper just decided one day that he was done, around 6 months. Not one of them ever went back. I should be happy I never had to coerce, bribe, lie, cheat or steal to get them to give up the binkie. So why, at 5 months, should I be surprised that Lillie is done? I guess I am not surprised, just a little frustrated and sad that there is no MAGIC way to get her to be quiet, calm down, or go to sleep.
Look at that unwanted, unloved binkie perched precariously just for the picture!
And it has fallen to the side without a second thought! Binkie out, smile on!

So I am putting this out there to all of the babies in the world- why do some of you take to binkies like a fish to water and others of you could care less? I tried talking to Lillie about it the other day as I was trying to get her to sleep.
Me: Please just take this binky so you can go to sleep and I can get something done! Why won't you take it? Just take it!
Lillie: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH (as said binky is sitting lifelessly in her mouth) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Goodbye binkies ( sob, sob). You will be missed by me!

Christmas

We celebrated with a quiet Christmas at home. Christmas Cookies..................

For........................

Santa! I guess Coop didn't get the memo.

And jammies, of course, for the Christmas Eve present. Not very exciting but a tradition we have.

After a restful sleep Santa came and all were blissfully happy! Especially with the long awaited gift of a Wii! Of course Guitar Hero was really for the parents.

Lillie's first present!

Blankets from Grandma and Grandpa McDaniel. The kids love them!

Christmas is not complete without some sort of Bears paraphernalia.

Emma's fruit snowman! Very creative, that one!

And look at Mady's excitement over a toothbrush. We might just forgo everything else next year and concentrate on healthy eating and dental hygiene.

We headed over to my sister Stephenie's house for dinner and games. The weather was a little scary, but we made it. All in all it was a fun day.

Love It!

This was in November when Lillie was just learning to hold her head up. Emma is a great reader and was able to hold her attention for quite some time.
